Loan Watch: Ben Irons out the scoreline

Focus on an eventful first week for the Dons youngster

Ben Mason was quick to make amends at the weekend, as he settles into life on loan with Braintree Town.

On Saturday, a penalty decision went against him early on with barely a minute on the clock. Such was Ben’s determination to put things right for The Iron though, our former youth team skipper took just a further five minutes to level the scores.

The visitors brought on former AFC Wimbledon loanee Michael Folivi for the last quarter of the game, but that’s how it finished with both sides claiming a point each.

“After the early setback, it was crucial we had a quick reaction and changed the momentum,” said Ben. “I felt like I’d be able to help with that and ended up being in a good position where the ball then dropped for me to finish. It was a great feeling, but it was more important we bounced back and pushed on straight away.”

“The first week went really well,” added Ben. “So much learning, which is what it’s all about. Two clean sheets and a goal in seven days is great! I’m looking forward to the rest of my time here and enjoying it.”

The young defender joined the National League South club on deadline day, before the closing of the summer transfer window. The deal runs until January. Having come on as a substitute for his debut, he helped keep a clean sheet in the win over Worthing the following day.

Ben stepped up in midweek with his first full 90 minutes in the goalless draw at Tonbridge Angels, which also featured our former FA Cup hero Scott Wagstaff for the hosts. Afterwards, Ben was put up for the club’s man of the match award for only his second appearance and finished third in an online vote.

Next up it’s a trip to Canvey Island this weekend for an FA Cup second qualifying round tie, which the right-back will be able to take part in.
