“I’m adapting and it’s a learning curve for me”

Josh Davison completed his first full 90 minutes of the season and got his first goal of the campaign, but a first home win in the league since March continued to elude us.

“It was bittersweet at the end, not getting the result we wanted,” said Josh who refused to make the gruelling conditions the reason for letting our goal lead slip in the second half. “It was tough with the heat, but it was tough for both sides.

“You can’t fault James Tilley with that last chance in time added on. He’ s scored seven goals for us already this season. If you wanted it to fall for one man, you wanted it to fall to him. He was unlucky at the end.

“The two goals we conceded came from quite direct play. One was on the counter-attack and they caught us on the break. Their player was free in the box for the other one and got the goal, but that’s unlike us. Normally we’d get that away, so we’ll need to look into it.”

Josh feels he’s adapting to the demands of the game at this level in his second season for the Dons, having reached double figures with his goalscoring last time around.

“I was normally a one last season or Harry Pell was in just behind me,” explained Josh. “I was having to do a lot, having to get the flicks and go in behind as well. Now, I’m more on the top line by myself and playing off someone in a partnership.

“I’ve had to kind of adapt and it’s been a learning curve for me, having to play different to how I’ve played in my career, but I’m getting used to it."

“You’re always going to get grabbed when you’re in on goal for set pieces. There’s no VAR and you can get away with a lot more in League Two than what you do at the top level. It’s part of the game and it’s always going to be there. You’ve just got to deal with it as best you can and give it back.

“I saw Ali scored for Iraq on international duty this week and that’s good. He’ll be positive when he comes back and be raring to get going with his goals here. With me off the mark as well, the strikers can be chipping in. It’s a positive sign that we can get more goals from around the team.

“We’ve got a full week ahead of training before we face Crewe at home next. With no Tuesday game that will do us the world of good, so we can just really focus on committing to Saturday and how we want to play.”
