Unbeaten league run comes to an end

Defeat at the Cherry Red Records Stadium

9 September 2023

AFC Wimbledon saw our unbeaten league run come to an end on Saturday afternoon as Stockport County came away as 2-1 winners.

Josh Davison had initially put us ahead inside the first 15 minutes, as he bagged his first goal of the season, however it was an advantage that we failed to build on as the visitors bit back in the second-half.

Clinical finishes from Louie Barry and Will Collar turned the game on its head as we pushed hard to come away with a point late on.

Despite our efforts it wasn’t to be, as we tasted defeat for the first time in League Two this season.

Johnnie Jackson made seven changes to the side that drew 1-1 against Stevenage in midweek as Alex Bass, Lee Brown, Ryan Johnson, James Tilley, Josh Neufville, James Ball and Isaac Ogundere were all restored to the starting eleven.

This saw Nik Tzanev, Ryan McLean, Ethan Sutcliffe, Jack Currie, Morgan Williams and Aron Sasu join the returning Omar Bugiel on the bench.

The first 15 minutes passed without incident as the two sides exchanged corners. Alex Pearce then had to be on high alert to dive full length and head a dangerous cross clear.

Things didn’t stay quiet for long as the Dons took the lead from a corner. Tilley whipped the delivery into the area, with Josh Davison having the simple task of prodding home for his first goal of the season.

Our number nine was on the hunt for a second soon after as he moved inside before seeing his effort well held by Ben Hinchcliffe. This set us up well for the second-half as we looked to push home our advantage.

However we were struck with a blow just five minutes into the half as Stockport found an equaliser. The ball was given away cheaply, allowing the visitors to counter attack and find Barry who finished well into the far corner.

Tilley was at his creative best again as he drilled a pinpoint pass out to Neufville, with our number 11 cutting inside and shooting just wide of the far post. It would be the away side that took the lead, a low cross making its way into the area for Collar to finish high into the net.

Nine minutes of stoppage time were shown as we pushed hard to take something from the game. The golden chance fell to Tilley in the final seconds of added on time, however the winger couldn’t quite guide his effort inside the post after dancing past two challenges.
