Late fightback halts title charge

AFC Wimbledon Women denied by Norwich

2 April 2024

An Easter Sunday thriller ended with AFC Wimbledon Women denied all three points, but they still have their title destiny firmly in their own hands.

Two late Norwich goals meant that it ended 2-2 at Carshalton, but Kevin Foster's side maintained a 10-point lead over the Canaries, albeit they have two games in hand.

The first clear-cut chance of the game on Sunday fell to Wimbledon, as Emily Donovan tried her luck from range, only to be denied by Norwich City goalkeeper Sarah Quantrill. Ashlee Hincks followed up the rebound, but Quantrill did exceptionally well to stop her shot from hitting the back of the net.

However, it was only a temporary reprieve for the visitors. Rosie Russell and Ashleigh Goddard combined well in front of goal, before the latter's effort went in off a Norwich defender and into the back of the net. The deadlock was broken, and the Dons led 1-0.

It was a dream half for Wimbledon, and the advantage was doubled on the stroke of half-time. Brèon Grant caused chaos down the wing, with some excellent skill, before finding Ashlee Hincks, who lashed the ball home.

Ellie Dorey almost added a third goal to the Dons’ tally, but she was denied by the Norwich keeper. Hannah Mackenzie was forced off just after the hour mark through injury and was replaced by Billie Brooks.

Shortly afterwards, Sandra Soares Martins was introduced in place of Brèon Grant, with Skye Bacon replacing Ashleigh Goddard.

It appeared that the Dons were cruising to all three points, but there was late drama in the last 10 minutes. First, the visitors halved the deficit when a free-kick by Freya Simmonds was diverted in by Holly Kennard, and there was a sting in the tail for Wimbledon in the 90th minute. Substitute Shannon Shaw struck the equaliser and that meant that the Dons still have work to do to clinch the title.
