AFC Wimbledon Women marked their return to the Cherry Red Records Stadium with a stunning six-goal haul.
Cambridge were brushed aside on Sunday with a 6-0 win, thanks to a hat-trick by Ashlee Hincks, a double from Emily Donovan, and an own goal.
It was a victory that provided a boost to the title hopes for top-of-the-table Wimbledon as goal difference could yet turn out to be crucial in the final reckoning – third placed Norwich would be level on points if they won their games in hand.
Kevin Foster’s side marched into the lead after 20 minutes when Donovan capitalised on a Cambridge defensive lapse before chipping the ball over Cambridge keeper Lauren Webb. There was more to come from Donovan in the first-half as she was again in the right place to slot the ball home after the Cambridge keeper punched the ball into her path from a free-kick.
The Dons needed an excellent save from Lauren Allen at the start of the second-half to maintain the two-goal advantage, but that was not a sign of things to come as the hosts restored their superiority. Though Webb made a flying save to deny Ashleigh Goddard, it was only a temporary reprieve for Cambridge. Hincks notched her first of the day with a deflected strike after a mix-up in the Cambridge box.
Matters got worse for the visitors shortly afterwards with an own goal making it four and there was simply no let-up from Wimbledon in the latter stages. Skye Bacon grabbed an assist on her debut as she sent the ball into the box towards Hincks, who made no mistake with another clinical finish, and she put the icing on the cake by completing her hat-trick from the penalty spot.
It was yet another stellar performance from the Dons as the Plough Lane crowd were treated to another impressive attacking display.
