Dons treble clinches cup win

Routine victory at Plough Lane

22 January 2024

AFC Wimbledon Women put in a professional performance at the Cherry Red Records Stadium as three goals proved to be enough to defeat Charlton Athletic Under-21s.

The unstoppable Ashlee Hincks continued her hotstreak in front of goal with another brace, whilst Hannah Mackenzie popped up with her first goal for the Dons as we progressed to the next round of the Capital Cup.

Coming into the game off the back of comprehensive 7-2 and 5-3 victories, Wimbledon were quick out the traps as the first chance of the game fell to Sandra Soares Martins who forced a save out of the Charlton goalkeeper, and the ball rebounded to Ellie Dorey, who’s shot was also palmed away.

Molly Childerhouse also forced a save out of the Addicks keeper as the Dons looked for the opener in the first 10 minutes.

Hincks stood over a corner after we’d won a series of set pieces. She swung the ball in beautifully and Mackenzie was there at the back post to head the ball home.

Dorey tried her luck from range as we searched for a second goal and forced a stop out of the keeper. Half an hour into the game and the home side looked comfortable.

Emily Donovan caused havoc down the left-hand side as she sent a searching ball in towards Soares Martins, that resulted in a corner. The corner caused all sorts of problems for the Charlton defence, and the Dons were awarded a penalty for a handball in the area. Hincks stepped up, and converted from the spot, to make it 2-0.

Lauren Allen was called into action just before the half ended and pulled off a fantastic stop to deny Charlton from getting on the scoresheet.

Soares Martins put some excellent pressure on the Charlton goalkeeper to force an error as the ball landed at Hincks’ feet. She tried her luck and struck the ball beautifully, and saw her effort go just over the bar.

As the clock hit the hour mark, Kevin Foster made his first change, with Soares Martins making way for Lucy Porter.

Ashleigh Goddard played a lovely ball into Hincks, who had the goalkeeper at full-stretch to tip her shot over the bar.

Fran Ali and Remmi Gardner were introduced for Childerhouse and Ashleigh Goddard as the Dons searched for a third goal to make the game safe.

Wimbledon won another penalty as Donovan was fouled in the box. Hincks then did the business to  secure herself a brace from the spot as we cruised through to the next round.

AFC Wimbledon Women: Lauren Allen, Rosie Russell, Kelly Highman, Ashlee Hincks, Hannah Mackenzie, Molly Childerhouse (Fran Ali), Emily Donovan, Sandra Soares Martins (Lucy Porter), Hannah Billingham, Ellie Dorey, Ashleigh Goddard (Remmi Gardner)
